Understanding the Health Disaster: Research Design for the Response to the 2014 West African Ebola Outbreak
2015
International audience; The 2014 Ebola outbreak in West Africa is the largest ever in history, affecting multiple countries and to this date, the World Health Organization has registered more than 6,500 deaths attributed to Ebola. The challenges arising from this outbreak to responders worldwide do not follow the standard characterisation or response patterns of natural sudden onset vs. conflict disasters. Rather, it is a medical emergency, which is intertwined with multiple challenges in the sectors decision-making, coordination, logistics and information management. In this paper, we present our research framework, which is based on desk research and initial interviews with responders. Th…
Weather Regimes in the Euro-Atlantic and Mediterranean sector and relationship with West African rainfall over the period 1989-2008 from a Self-Organ…
2011
International audience; Weather Regimes (WR) have been defined over the Euro-Mediterranean region [60°W-60°E; 15°N-70°N] from May to October season using the daily Sea Level Pressure, 700 hPa geopotential height and specific humidity from ERA-interim over 1989-2008 period. Computations are based on a neural network lassification technique referred to as Self Organizing Maps and the WR produced can be used by the community for comparison with other periods, projection onto model outputs, seasonal prediction or teleconnection studies. The article particularly examines the relationship between WR and West African (WA) rainfall and our results suggest that changes in particular WR frequencies c…
The Recent Development of a Sweet-Tasting Brazzein and its Potential Industrial Applications
2016
International audience; Brazzein is a small heat- and pH-stable sweet-tasting protein isolated from the West African plant, Pentadiplandra brazzeana. Brazzein combines a highly sweet potency, a long history of human consumption, and a remarkable stability, giving it great potential as a natural sweetener. Due to the difficulties of obtaining brazzein from its natural source, several efforts have been made to express brazzein using various heterologous expression systems. This chapter describes the biochemical, structural, sensory, and physiological properties of brazzein. We will summarize the current knowledge of the structure-activity relationship of brazzein. The biotechnological product…

The West African Monsoon Modeling and Evaluation project (WAMME) and its First Model Intercomparison Experiment
2008
International audience; This paper presents the scientific challenge in West African monsoon (WAM) simulation and discusses the West African Monsoon Modeling and Evaluation project (WAMME) initiative and its approaches to improve WAM simulations. Major scientific highlights from the first WAMME model comparison are the focus of the paper. Based on the first WAMME experiment, the WAMME models' performance is evaluated with precipitation being the major focus. The analyses indicate that the models with specified SST generally have reasonable simulations of the mean spatial distribution of WAM precipitation but largely fail to produce proper daily precipitation frequency distributions. WAMME m…
International public administration on the tip of the tongue: language as a feature of representative bureaucracy in the Economic Community of West A…
2020
Recent scholarship shows increasing interest in gender, ethnic or national representation within regional and international organizations. In contrast, language as a criterion of representation has rarely been scrutinized. We argue that this constitutes an important oversight for two reasons: (1) language is an important identity marker; and (2) language regimes in international public administrations can uniquely address representativeness relative to both member states and groups of citizens. Our article explores language representation in the Economic Community of West African States, and pursues a twofold objective: first, it extends the applicability of representative bureaucracy theo…
Alu insertion polymorphisms in the African Sahel and the origin of Fulani pastoralists.
2017
The origin of Western African pastoralism, represented today by the Fulani nomads, has been a highly debated issue for the past decades, and has not yet been conclusively resolved. This study focused on Alu polymorphisms in sedentary and nomadic populations across the African Sahel to investigate patterns of diversity that can complement the existing results and contribute to resolving issues concerning the origin of West African pastoralism.A new dataset of 21 Alu biallelic markers covering a substantial part of the African Sahel has been analysed jointly with several published North African populations.Interestingly, with regard to Alu variation, the relationship of Fulani pastoralists to …
